Pointing out the flaws in one´s opponents still doesn´t have to involve distortion and character assasination, and we see too much of that IMO. The point of this thread was to point out why we felt the way we do without taking pot shots at the other side. I disagree completely that the ugly, negative campaigning we see in this day and age is somehow necessary as part of our democracy. I don´t know if I´ve ever disagreed with you more. And I disagree with you pretty much all the time. _________________ Schadenfreude. |

| Yes they can say "nice" things and not believe it but the slams are also generally distorted. If one candidate says they are for helping the elderly but their record shows they voted for Social Security or Medicare cuts then I want to see this hypocrisy. Remember, most bills have many parts so if a candidate is against part of it then they vote against the whole thing. Many times only the part relevant to the story is what is mentioned in the slam campaigns. When one aspect of the bill is highlighted in a campaign to go against someone, is it not also lying by omission? IMHO a solid campaign has a good balance of what is right for a candidate and what is wrong with the other. Good balance as the key phrase. |

Exactly Kyle. The legislative process is so complex, and some bills have so many components and riders, that a vote can be completely distorted as being for or against something when it might in fact be exactly the opposite.
It´s these type of distortions, manipulations and half-truths that make me hate modern campaigns so much. And both sides do it to varying degrees. That garbage is not necessary in our democracy. _________________ Schadenfreude. |

Well, no one wants to take the time to listen and read and infform themselves like they used to ( before TV ). The record is truth, as are the speech clips. The distortion, I am not for...as I have said, point out the truth. Kerry calling Bush a liar and crook, that is a dirty shot and where is the proof? The words he spoke are the record, and can be used against him. _________________ Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain

A line item veto is a cop out. The process is what it is, the line itewm gives way too much power to the executive branch. It really is a cop out from the legislature, saying that they cant do the job they are constitutional bound to do, so here we will give our powers, the powers of the people away. Pretty disgusting really. _________________ Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain

I myself would prefer the opportunity to vote on certain issues, put it on the ballot. Same-sex marriage, put it on the ballot...tax increases, put it on the ballot (it IS our money in the first place), this ridiculousness going on here in Des Moines with the school district and their complete failure of a budget. I´ve done budgets for multi-million dollar restaurants and if I had done anything this pathetic, I would have been terminated without question. Student enrollment has decreased 3%, teachers have been increased 18.1%, spending has increased 48.3%....yet they have to "cut" $7.5 million from their budget, the administrators have done a terrible job.
Put it on the ballot, this should all be our decision...also this way IF something doesn´t go someone´s way and they did NOT vote, they can shut their traps as they have themselves to blame. _________________ "For those who understand, no explanation is needed.

On the line item veto, it was put in there BECAUSE the legislature could not do their job. Too many crappy additions were killing good bills. Now to get around these, I believe they just do the so-called "omnibus" bill which either approves or kills everything left over after the session. I may be incorrect on that...it has happened once before I believe. _________________ "For those who understand, no explanation is needed.

I completely agree. The problem of the budget failures everywhere are not prejudice to conservative/liberal.

Kyle, at no place in my last few posts did I point a finger of blame to either party regarding the budget failures. My point being if we (the voters) are responsible for more of these issues we would have ourselves to blame....that being IF anyone takes the responsibility of voting. _________________ "For those who understand, no explanation is needed.

dupko, as one of this site's leading provocateurs, I did it so that eight years later I could get under your skin.
While I hope it worked, sadly, I doubt you ever read this reply. And even if you did, I'm sure you couldn't understand it since it's not written in binary. |
