Second public intox arrest in a year. I would bet he has never quit drinking and this is the time he is caught. He needs to move on, and the U should puch him out the door. This is more of the debacle that is IOWA Basketball w/Todd Lickliter. This needs to change, and the coach needs to go. _________________ Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain

Your comments imply that Lickliter is somehow to blame. Or at least that he has no control over his players. What Tucker does at 1 AM on a Saturday night is pretty much Tucker's responsibility, in my opinion. The coach cannot be a babysitter 24-7.
I'm with you though, I think this is Tucker's 3rd strike (2 PI's and the grades issue). He should probably be pushed aside to make way for players who truly value their scholarships and the privilege of wearing a Hawkeye uniform.

Actually, it is on Lickliter, as he is in charge of this program, he is its CEO. While he cant be with the players 24/7, he sets the team culture, the rules, he enforces, and as he says so often, that the other players are to watch over each other, to help them be accountable. The system broke, you wonder about the follow up with a player that has failed twice in the previous year, and what of his interpersonal relationships with his kids, I fear he doesnt have much the kids ( and thats why we have so many leave ).
We have been on SA and KF in regards to this, its fair to expect the same from Lickliter. How he handles this will have an effect on how his tenure goes. _________________ Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain

You're right that he needs to step up and handle this thing with Tucker the right way. Alford really dropped in my estimation after that Pierre Pierce debacle. I agree the general public judgement of Lickliter in the near term will be on how he handles Tucker, and in the long term, the W/L record next season.
Though in general, I think that's unfair. I don't happen to agree that as "CEO", he is personally responsible for every shred of the program. If that were the case, then Tucker should go free, and Lickliter should serve Anthony's jail time.
And I also disagree with the characterization of the basketball program as a company. If it were so, Lickliter would merely be middle management. Gary Barta and Sally Mason would be upper management, and the Governor of the State of Iowa would be CEO. Ridiculous.

I dread what I think is going to happen to Iowa in the Big 10 this year. The conference is better, and I don't like our prospects at all. Iowa is not any better than last year, maybe worse. I would give Lickliter one more season to turn this around unless he performs some kind of miracle. I think Purdue will toy with them tonight.

The game was actually watchable, but, Uber, you're right - our boys aren't any better than they were last year and the entire conference got better, it seems. It's going to be an embarrassing year and it's time to end the Lickliter experiment and grab a very high profile coach if he's out there.

They fought hard, and a few of the players Iowa has are good ones to build into a team, but they dont have what they need across the board to win. Plus, much of the reason they stayed in it as long as they did, was simply by slowing it down, reducing possessions, and I hate that style of play. It seems to admit that you are the lesser team and need super super effort to win, and it wont be on talent. The incoming kids look good, but a PG, one that is super quick and can run a show, is needed, and Tucker's ride should be used for that. Plus, why redshirt Archie? It screws up the scholarship balance, plus they need a big guy now, and if he plays now, he gains experience which will help next year.
I am sick of hearing how hard this system is, its not supposed to be quantum physics, its BB, attack the hoop, defend tough and smart, and win.
I am ready for a change, a winner who can sell himself, the school and what he wants to do. Scott Drew maybe? _________________ Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain

With Tucker or not, this is a horrible basketball team. That Minnesota game Saturday was unwatchable. They were whipped every which way by an average team on Iowa's homecourt.
I was talking with my son about Iowa basketball last week. Without hesitation, he said their main problem is that they are all white. Except for Cole, you could say that is true, and it could be one explanation why they are being beaten athletically just about game. You would think a college team would recruit to have a nice mix of players: some hard-nosed guys and agile big men, some outside 3-pt specialists and some athletes. A mix of black and white players with their different skill sets would seem like a good recruitment strategy.
I am asking you guys: Do you think Iowa needs more good black players? Do you think Linkliter can recruit them or do they have very few black players on the team because he can't recruit them?

I don't think color is the issue. Athleticism comes in all shapes and sizes and colors. Eric May showed pretty good athleticism, but he's undersized and only a freshman.
As for recruiting, Roy Marble, Jr. is coming in next year. Not sure of the race make up of Ben Brust or the others though.

Marble is a "legacy." If his daddy didn't play for Iowa, I bet he would not choose Lickliter and the Hawkeyes.
I think the best teams, including the best in the Big 10, have a variety of skill sets and basketball backgrounds, kids who come from small Midwestern towns and also from large cities and suburbs. To me, that mix is important to cover all facets of the game and be competitive in major college basketball.

Uber, personally, I hate the colour(race) typecasting of players, its just not right ( not accurate ). While it may seem that black players are more athletic, its not alwasy true, and it doesnt guarantee a better( or more complete ) player. Oftentimes, the generalization is that they are urban/city players, yet the number on rated high school kid this year is from Ames, IA ( hardly a urban titan, ....and yes, he is black, but so what ), and just a couple of years ago the NBA MVP was a small PG from Canada, Gonzaga, and played in Phoenix, and he was a bit over 6'0". Now, in theNBA, athleticism is much much much more an issue, yet Steve Nash, as a white PG was MVP, would you say he was athletic?
FYI, yes, Devyn Marble is black. This staff, to their credit, took a chance and got him before he exploded this season and now he looks to be a BIG get, and yes, very athletic, 6'6". Brust is from the north Chicago suburbs (does that translate white?), 6'3" ,he is quite quick, the write ups I have read say he quite athletic, is aggressive, and can score. Larson is from South Dakota(tranlates white?), 6'9", is considered very athletic, very skilled (like a Robbie Hummel, but bigger and more multi dimensional), and very good get (especially for this staff ). McCabe is from Sioux City ( translates white? ), 6'7"( maybe still growing ), is athletic, multi skilled, hard nosed, talented, ( like a Settles, Brunner, Street....classic IOWA player....and Settles, until the back injury his sophomore year, was very athletic ) another good get. What this team seriously lacks on its roster is a top flight PG, capable of creating ( for himself and others ), running the show, dicatating tempo, and being a one man press breaker....a leader.
Add in this thought now, even with talent, can Lickliter coach it to win? Is this system that takes way too long to learn ( or the coach and his assistants cant teach it ) a problem to on court success? Is it a negative to recruiting? How long is Lickliter's leash? _________________ Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain

Well, after your seemingly happy-with-the-results review of next year's recruiting class, I'd say the answer to your last question is "No".
As for the first point above, I'm still not convinced Lickliter has some evil "system" that is being forcibly imposed on unwilling or incapable subjects.
Isn't it possible that all the player departures (due to dying mothers, homesickness, or whatever) left the staff with a bunch of green, inexperienced freshmen, and THAT is why it takes "way too long to learn"??
The improved play overall this season, and the win last night over Northwestern seem to say to ME that the staff CAN coach and teach.

Wow, beat NW and you get all warm and fuzzy and think we can compete for BigTen championships, huh? The departures sentiment is weak and completely on Lickliter for being unable to communicate with those kids and retain them, player retention is a part of the job and a mark of a successful coach. Its not all freshmen, there are plenty of sophs and a junior and senior with significant minutes. Its funny, watch Lisa Bluder's team, thats one of mostly freshmen and sophs, and a LOT of injuries, and they play at a high level RIGHT NOW, thats amazing. And then there is Lickliter, always whining about continuity, guys grasping his system, and needing to develop. Amazing how can immediately coach to win, the other not so much.
BTW, the players have played better together, but slow down basketball isnt winning basketball, especially on the high level that IOWA has sought to be at ( and has been at at times ). _________________ Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain

Don't twist what I'm saying Henery. If you go back, all I claimed was that a 3rd Big Ten win indicates the ability to coach and teach, that the team is indeed improving. I never said anything about Big Ten championships.
I'm not sure I agree that the Women's Basketball team's 13-11 record (6-7 in conference) constitutes playing at a high level right now.
But it sounds like we just disagree, Henery, which is fine. I won't try to convince you that Lickliter has some worth. You seem to have made up your mind.
FWIW...Tucker just quit this morning. While you'll probably say that indicates more incompetence by Lickliter, I say good riddance to a troubled kid. Despite his scoring ability, keeping him on the team would have probably only come back to be more trouble down the road.
