One City. One Team.

The Chicago Bears fight song, Bear Down, Chicago Bears, was introduced in 1941. Though Jerry Downs is listed as the composer, it actually is a pseudonym for Al Hoffman (who also wrote the words and music for the song If I Knew You Were Coming I'd Have Baked a Cake).

Hoffman's words for the Bears' fight song:

Bear down, Chicago Bears, make every play clear the way to victory;
Bear down, Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly.
We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T-formation.
Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you're wearing the crown.
You're the pride and joy of Illinois, Chicago Bears, bear down.

Bear Down was written after the Bears destroyed the Redskins in the NFL champonship 73-0, the most lopsided shutout ever in the NFL (still) and in a championship game. In that game, after losing to the Redskins earlier in the season, they installed the T and dominated ( to put it mildly ).

From the Lyric Opera of Chicago(another unique and special Chicago thing ).

What is cool, is the history and tradition of the Bears. When you go to a game and see the crowd sing this at the game is just a hoot. Look at some of the video from fans at games( on the side of the link to youtube ) and it gives you a bit of taste of it. Also, the rivalry with the Packers is simply the best in the NFL, hands down.

I am sure the history and tradition of this song is nice, Henery, but I can't get into NFL fight songs. When I lived in D.C., they kept singing the Redskins fight song on the radio. They seem out of place in the pros, kind of like cheerleaders, who look ridiculous out there on the sidelines of an NFL game.

I do like college fight songs, however, and used to know every one of the Big Ten songs.

You gotta be in Soldier when they score to appreciate it. I find college song much more compelling, but this one is fun.

Pro fight songs are kinda dumb, but the Bears seems better than most (as does the Redskins, actually). Pro cheerleaders are totally pointless. It's one step up from workin' the pole.

Yes, for the pros, it seems silly, but with the Bears, it works, especially when you are at the game, its fun part of being there. The cheerleaders are completely pointless, and I like seeing scantily dressed women.

Only for panhandlers in downtown Portland. Laughing

Henery, you gotta love what the Ducks did to Okie State. They took a few body blows in the first half, adjusted and then rolled in the second. Great season. Mike Bellotti is the best unknown head coach in college football because he is tucked out here in the cosy Pacific Northwest and gets no national media attention.

Mike Bellotti and UO get plenty of national media attention. The Pac-10 in general (save for USC) gets a little overlooked because the games are often played so late.

Oregon has knocked on the door of BCS glory several times but has yet to break it down. 2001 was the closest they came, the year they deserved to play for the title but didn't.

I don't get it, Donny, the Ducks play at prime time here! Laughing

The year before their first national championship run in 2001, when the BCS swindled them out of the title game because of lack of national respect, Ducks beat Texas in the Holiday Bowl. In 2007, if Dixon stays healthy, Ducks are in the title game. Oregon is primed for a third run in 2009. The schedule is tough with non conference against Boise and Utah. But Cal, USC come to Eugene.

What is remarkable is that Oregon is a small state in population, producing no more top-shelf athletes than Iowa most years. Like Iowa, the Ducks depend on out of state athletes at the speed positions. They have shown a smaller school can do it ... and so can Iowa if all of the planets align.

The facilities (and Phil Knight's $$$) can't hurt. I'd argue they probably have a few more athletes to choose from on the west coast, what with California next door, but, I agree they've done well all things considered.
