As you might expect, football is still the #1 topic in the popular press following the long holiday weekend. Kirk Ferentz holds his weekly press conference today, and talks plenty about the Cyclones and this Saturday's State Championship game, as well as last weekend's win over EIU, injuries, and this week's depth chart. Center Josh Koeppel is interviewed on NBC's Today Show after his motorbike crash. Paki O'Meara earns Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honors, and ISU tries to figure out how to score a touchdown this weekend against the Hawks.
In other news, Iowa Wrestling announces their 2010 schedule, Women's Basketball gets a good recruit out of Wisconsin, Field Hockey gets their first win in grand fashion, and Cross Country's senior captain is happy to be a leader. Go Hawks!!

Well, folks we're one week into the season, and I'm not sure if we know any better than this time last year what kind of team we have. Bear with me here - at this point last season some of us felt that we were looking at a team that would find a way to win, no matter how bad it looked. Of course some fans a year ago were on still under observation at the hospital after that finish to the UNI game.
This year, I think we have a team that won't let their foot off the pedal and protect a 10 point lead going into the 4th quarter...
This week we have the regular slate of Big Ten (minus Indiana, who is recovering from that nail biter with Towson) games, plus a couple of state universities from out west squaring off to answer a question that nobody asked.

It's beautiful Saturday morning, and we're about 3 hours shy of kickoff for the first game of Iowa's 2010 season. Hopes and expectations are high this year. Let's see if the Hawks can perform when they're right in the middle of everybody's radar scope.
This week's picks shouldn't present too much of a problem as almost everybody is playing their out-of-conference-cupcake games. Except Purdue. Those guys just can't get with the program. They make me seethe with anger. In between the gnashing of teeth, I wish a pox upon their house. Ditto on all counts for the Fighting Zooks.
How's that Commissioner Delaney? Did I get it right? I don't have much experience with this Purdue rivalry thing. Can I still hate Illinois?

Iowa Football coach Kirk Ferentz gets his contract extended through 2020 and is now the highest paid Big Ten coach. The new Big Ten divisions are announced, as well as schedules for 2011 and 2012, and Iowa's new cross-division protected rival is....Purdue?? A world-record hokey pokey attempt at FRYFest, Coach Kirk hates motor scooters, and a preview of Iowa's opening game vs. Eastern Illinois this Saturday. All that plus Field Hockey, Volleyball, and Iowa's Tom Brands is named a Big Ten icon. Go Hawks!!

Not only are the Hawks back to prove that 2009's 9-0 start wasn't a fluke, Hawkeyes.Org is back
with the regular fall columns you've come to expect. The Fearless Forecast, Hawkeye Harangue, other
contributed articles, and once again, my weekly "Hawk-itorial". It's all football all the time this
week as college games began tonight. Iowa State started slow, but eventually put away Northern Illinois.
Read on and I'll talk about whether Iowa can do the same with the Eastern school from the same state.

Every March, after the NCAA brackets are announced, you hear some staggering statistic about the workplace productivity that’s lost due to the nation’s loyal sports fans dutifully researching their picks.
I’m a bit surprised that there’s no equivalent statistic bandied about during the week or two before college football starts. I figure middle managers and shift supervisors across the land must have noticed a decline in productivity over the last week, at least based on my own behavior.
